Oud (in Arabic ‘oudh’) is an extremely rare and precious oil found in agarwood, the resinous heartwood of the aquilaria tree from Southeast Asia. One of the most expensive perfume ingredients in the world, often described as ‘liquid gold’, is highly valued for its very aromatic and complex scent, a warm sweetness mixed with woody, smoky, animalic, and balsamic notes. Prized for centuries in the Middle East particularly where its smoke has been used during opulent beauty rituals, Oud has now conquered the fragrance world, leading to a bounty of scents based on this compelling note.
